Please use this form to submit your preliminary-round application to the Mid-South Flute Society competitions.


Young Artist Requirements (age 18-30):

  • Valerie Coleman - Requiem Milonga recorded w/ piano
  • A work of choice between 5 and 10 minutes in length, does not need to include piano


College Masterclass Requirements (current undergraduates students):

  • 1 work of choice 5-10 minutes in length, does not need to include piano


High School Soloist Requirements (enrolled in grades 9-12):

  • 1 work of choice 5-10 minutes in length, written for flute alone

High School Soloist Competition

For students enrolled in grades 9-12.

Applicants will submit a preliminary recording from which 3 finalists will be selected to perform in the live finals at the 2027 Mid-South Flute Festival, February 26-27 in Memphis, TN. 

Prizes:
1st Prize: $150
2nd Prize: $100
3rd Prize: $50

Preliminary Round Requirement:
  • Record a selection of choice, 5-10 minutes in length, written for flute alone

Final Round Requirement:
  • ​Perform a selection of choice, 5-10 minutes in length, written for flute alone. Repertoire from the preliminary round can be repeated.

Fee: $35.00

Young Artist Competition

 For flutists age 18-30.

Applicants will submit a preliminary recording from which 3 finalists will be selected to perform in the live finals at the 2027 Mid-South Flute Festival, February 26-27 in Memphis, TN. 

Prizes:
1st Prize: $1000
2nd Prize: $500
3rd Prize: $300

Preliminary Round Requirement:
  • Record Valerie Coleman's Requiem Milonga w/ piano
  • Record one additional selection of choice, 5-10 minutes in length, with or without piano

Final Round Requirement:
  • Perform Valerie Coleman's Requiem Milonga w/ piano
  • Perform a program of additional works of choice, with or without piano, totaling 10-15 minutes of music in addition to the required piece. Repertoire from the preliminary round may be repeated.

College Masterclass Competition

For students currently enrolled in an undergraduate program.

Applicants will submit a preliminary recording from which 3 finalists will be selected to perform in a masterclass for the guest artist of the 2027 Mid-South Flute Festival, February 26-27 in Memphis, TN.

Preliminary Round Requirement:
  • Record one selection of choice, 5-10 minutes in length, with or without piano

Fee: $35.00
Competition rules:
  • All preliminary recordings must be continuous, unedited takes of the piece and should be audio files only. Each selection may be a separate recording, you do not need to record both selections for the Young Artist Competition in the same take. Editing is permitted in order to trim unneeded air time, but the flute playing must be continuous and unedited.
  • Preliminary recordings should include no identifying markers on the file name or in the recording itself as preliminary judging is done anonymously.
  • Please do not use studio effects such as reverb. Please listen to your recording to ensure you are happy with the audio quality and adjust either your space or the distance of the recording device from your flute to maximize the audio quality. Professional recordings are neither expected nor required.
  • Preliminary recordings should be uploaded to a filesharing service (dropbox, google drive, etc.). You will share the link to the uploaded file in your application. Please ensure that the link sharing settings make it available for anyone with access to the link. For step-by-step instructions for enabling sharing in filesharing services, click here.
  • Pieces written with piano accompaniment must be recorded with piano accompaniment. Accompaniment recordings such as YouTube recordings or SmartMusic are acceptable.
  • Selections could be complete pieces, a movement of a piece, or a selection of movements from a longer piece.
  • Finalist will perform with a live pianist. They may choose to bring their own pianist, or a pianist can be provided for them for a fee of $50.
  • Previous 1st-prize winners are ineligible.
  • Judges' decisions are final.
